Christmas in Chattanooga 2026: A Local’s Guide to Holiday Events

Christmas in Chattanooga sneaks up on you. One week the leaves are still coming down on Lookout Mountain, and the next the vintage trains at the railroad museum are wrapped in colored bulbs, the symphony is rehearsing carols, and the newly restored Walnut Street Bridge is glowing over the Tennessee River. It is a small city that goes all in on the season, and most of the best of it fits into a long weekend.

At Enjoy Unique Stays, we have hosted guests across the Scenic City for more than a decade, and December is one of our favorite months to do it. This is our local guide to Christmas in Chattanooga for 2026: the events worth booking early, the shows and markets, the riverfront at night, and a simple three-day plan. When you are ready to choose a home base, our Chattanooga vacation rentals put you minutes from all of it.

Good to know: Chattanooga’s holiday season runs from mid-November to New Year’s Eve, and the busiest nights are the December weekends. The North Pole Limited and Rock City’s Enchanted Garden of Lights both sell timed tickets online, so book those first and plan the rest of the trip around them.

The Christmas Lights, in Short

The lights are what most people picture when they think of Christmas in Chattanooga, and the big one is on top of Lookout Mountain. Rock City turns its gardens into the Enchanted Garden of Lights every year, and it is the one light show we tell every first-time visitor not to skip. Ruby Falls usually decorates its outdoor plaza and historic castle with twinkling lights, a Forest of Wishes, and hot cocoa by the fireplace in its café (2026 dates are typically posted in November). Down in the city, the Chattanooga Zoo’s Asian Lantern Festival has run from late November into January in recent years, with nearly 50 glowing lantern displays; watch the zoo’s website for the 2026 edition.

Rock City’s Enchanted Garden of Lights

Rock City has been a Lookout Mountain landmark since the 1930s, and during the holidays its trails, bridges, and rock passages are covered in lights and holiday scenes. The walk takes you past a nativity and the original Rock City peace doves, across the Swing-A-Long Bridge, out to Lover’s Leap for the night view, through Fairyland Caverns, and along Christmas Tree Lane to Santa’s workshop. Santa visits nightly through December 23, and there is hot chocolate along the way.

Weeknights are noticeably calmer than Fridays and Saturdays, and the earlier entry times are the easiest with young kids. Give yourself about 90 minutes to walk the full route without rushing.

Christmas Train Rides in Chattanooga

Chattanooga is a railroad town, and nothing makes that clearer than December at the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum.

The North Pole Limited at the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum

The North Pole Limited is the museum’s most popular event and has been a Chattanooga Christmas tradition since 1999. Families gather at the Grand Junction Depot, then board vintage passenger cars for a round trip of about an hour to the “North Pole,” with cookies, hot chocolate, holiday storytelling, and light displays along the tracks. Kids can write a letter to Santa on board, and Santa himself is waiting when the train arrives.

  • Rating: 4.7 stars (97 reviews for the North Pole Limited; the museum holds 4.8 stars from 19,917 reviews)
  • Address: 4119 Cromwell Rd, Chattanooga, TN 37421
  • 2026 dates: November 13 – December 23
  • Tickets: Traditional seats from $38, the Elves & Bells Car from $100, and Santa’s Private Car from $190, through the official North Pole Limited page
  • Good to know: The museum says tickets go fast, and weekend evenings sell out first

If your dates are flexible, a weeknight departure early in the season is the easiest ticket to get. Arrive a little early to walk the lit-up depot before boarding.

Holiday Shows and Concerts

Chattanooga’s stages fill up in December, and a show is a perfect plan for a rainy night. Good news for 2026: the historic Tivoli Theatre reopened on October 20 after a multi-year restoration, so check its calendar for holiday programming, too.

Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Auditorium

Memorial Auditorium hosts two of the city’s biggest holiday performances this year. Chattanooga Ballet’s The Nutcracker is listed for December 11–13, 2026, and the Chattanooga Symphony & Opera’s pops concert, Home for the Holidays, takes the stage on Saturday, December 19 at 7:30 PM with the CSO Chorus and the Metropolitan Bells.

  • Rating: 4.6 stars (1,332 reviews)
  • Address: 399 McCallie Ave, Chattanooga, TN 37402
  • Phone: (423) 757-5580
  • Tickets: Home for the Holidays on the CSO website; confirm Nutcracker times with Chattanooga Ballet or the venue box office before you buy

Buy from the official box office rather than resale sites, which often list holiday shows far above face value.

Chattanooga Theatre Centre

Across the river on the North Shore, the Chattanooga Theatre Centre is staging Harry Connick Jr.’s The Happy Elf from December 4 to 20, 2026, a family-friendly musical about an elf trying to bring Christmas cheer to a gloomy town. It is a sweet, easy pick for kids, and the riverside setting makes it simple to pair with dinner on the North Shore.

Downtown and the Riverfront at Christmas

Downtown Chattanooga is compact and walkable, which makes it easy to string together a market, the aquarium, and an evening on the river in a single day.

Chattanooga Holiday Market

The Chattanooga Market’s Holiday Market is back in town for 2026 after spending 2025 in Knoxville. It fills the Chattanooga Convention Center for two December weekends with local makers, artists, and food producers, and it is the best one-stop shop in the city for handmade gifts and stocking stuffers.

  • Rating: 4.6 stars (2,181 reviews for the Convention Center)
  • Address: 1 Carter St, Chattanooga, TN 37402
  • 2026 dates: December 12–13 and December 19–20
  • Admission: Free; past markets ran Saturday 10 AM to 5 PM and Sunday 11 AM to 5 PM, so confirm 2026 hours at holiday.market

Saturday mornings bring the most energy; Sunday afternoons are quieter if you want to browse slowly.

Tennessee Aquarium

Each December, the Tennessee Aquarium celebrates Holidays Under the Peaks, and the star of the show is SCUBA Claus, a diving Santa who waves to kids from inside the big river exhibits. In recent seasons he has dived on December weekends at 2 PM in the River Journey building. The 2026 schedule had not been posted as of October, so check the aquarium’s website before you plan around it.

Southern Belle Riverboat

The Southern Belle sails holiday cruises on the Tennessee River through the season. The Christmas Carol Dinner Cruise is a two-hour evening sailing with live music, a buffet dinner, pilothouse tours, and an appearance from Santa on Fridays and Saturdays. There is also a ‘Tis the Season Luncheon cruise, and a 21+ New Year’s Eve cruise if you are staying through the end of the year.

  • Address: 151 Riverfront Pkwy, Chattanooga, TN 37402
  • Phone: (423) 266-4488

Walnut Street Bridge

After sitting closed last Christmas, the Walnut Street Bridge is open again. The 1891 pedestrian bridge reopened on October 3, 2026, after an 18-month restoration that replaced its decking with new cedar and upgraded its structure and electrical systems. At night the lights glow along the whole span, and the walk from downtown to the North Shore is one of the best free things to do in the city in December.

  • Rating: 4.8 stars (2,888 reviews)
  • Address: 1 Walnut St, Chattanooga, TN 37403
  • Hours: Open 24 hours
  • Good to know: The bridge lights are mostly white but change colors for special occasions, so you may catch them in holiday colors

More December Traditions to Plan Around

A few more Chattanooga traditions are worth knowing about, even though their 2026 details are still to come:

  • MAINx24: Southside’s free, 24-hour street festival is held on the first Saturday of December, which would be December 5 in 2026. The morning parade along Main Street is the highlight; look for the official schedule in early November.
  • Ruby Falls Discovery Day: Every December 30, Ruby Falls marks the anniversary of the cave’s 1928 discovery, and in past years it has sold a limited number of morning tours at the original $2 price. Tickets have gone on sale online about ten days ahead.
  • New Year’s Eve: If you are staying for the full holiday stretch, the riverfront and the Southern Belle’s New Year’s cruise are the easy ways to ring in 2027.

For the rest of the year’s festivals, our Chattanooga events guide has the full calendar.

A 3-Day Christmas in Chattanooga Weekend

If you only have a long weekend, this is how we would spend it. It balances the big ticketed events with slow, cozy time so nobody burns out.

Friday

  • Arrive, settle in, and head up Lookout Mountain for an evening at Rock City’s Enchanted Garden of Lights.
  • Late dinner back in town at one of our favorite restaurants in Chattanooga.

Saturday

  • Morning at the Chattanooga Holiday Market (December 12 or 19) or an early session at the Tennessee Aquarium.
  • Afternoon on the North Shore, then a matinee or evening performance of The Happy Elf.
  • Walk back across the Walnut Street Bridge after dark.

Sunday

  • Ride the North Pole Limited (book well ahead), or take the Southern Belle’s luncheon cruise.
  • Swap in a show if your dates line up: The Nutcracker runs December 11–13, and Home for the Holidays is Saturday, December 19.

Local Tips for Christmas in Chattanooga

  • Book the big three first. Lock in the North Pole Limited, Rock City, and any show tickets before anything else; they set the shape of your trip.
  • Go midweek if you can. Lines are shorter everywhere, and the lights look exactly the same on a Tuesday.
  • Pack for two climates. Lookout Mountain is noticeably colder and windier than downtown, especially after dark.
  • Expect changeable weather. Chattanooga Decembers are usually mild but can turn rainy, so keep an indoor backup like the aquarium or a show.
  • Watch the calendar around the holiday itself. Rock City is closed December 24, the aquarium closes on Christmas Day, and the North Pole Limited’s last day is December 23.
  • Not sure December is right for your group? Our best time to visit Chattanooga guide compares every season.

Frequently Asked Questions: Christmas in Chattanooga

What are the best things to do for Christmas in Chattanooga?
Ride the North Pole Limited at the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum, walk Rock City’s Enchanted Garden of Lights on Lookout Mountain, shop the Chattanooga Holiday Market, see The Nutcracker or the symphony’s Home for the Holidays at Memorial Auditorium, and end the night on the newly reopened Walnut Street Bridge.

When do Chattanooga’s Christmas events start in 2026?
The season opens in mid-November. Rock City’s Enchanted Garden of Lights and the North Pole Limited both begin November 13, 2026, and most shows and markets fall in the first three weekends of December.

Is Rock City open on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day?
The Enchanted Garden of Lights is closed on December 24, 2026, and runs nightly through December 31. Check Rock City’s website for Christmas Day hours before you go, since tickets are timed and sold online only.

Is Chattanooga a good place to spend Christmas with kids?
Yes. The North Pole Limited, SCUBA Claus at the Tennessee Aquarium, The Happy Elf at the Chattanooga Theatre Centre, and Santa’s nightly visits at Rock City (through December 23) are all built with families in mind, and most attractions are within a 20-minute drive of downtown.

Rarely. Chattanooga winters are usually mild with cool, sometimes rainy days, and snow is the exception rather than the rule. Lookout Mountain runs colder than the city, so bring warm layers for evenings at the lights.
